Amazigh celebrate Yennayer 2973
As of Thursday, 12 January, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and parts of Egypt, as well as the diaspora, celebrate the New Year of the Amazigh, which they call "Yennayer"
- 2023 approves the Amazigh calendar in 2973. This celebration dates back to ancient times and is rooted in North African folk tales and myths, and is a revival of the link between the Amazigh and the land on which they live, as well as of the Earth's wealth and generosity. Therefore, January is a celebration of nature, agricultural life, renaissance and abundance.
1)Who celebrates?
The Amazigh celebrates 12 13 January, whose culture is rooted in pre-Arab North Africa, as well as Arab communities in the Maghreb region and in Egypt.
2) How to prepare
- January celebrations focus on family gatherings and enjoying delightful music. Mothers interested in concert arrangements are a feast of traditional foods in preparation for the celebration.
- It has become customary to wear traditional Amazigh costumes and jewellery for the occasion. In keeping with the values of renewal and life, January became an occasion to celebrate important life events such as wedding, circumcision and the child's first haircut.

In some regions of Algeria, January celebrations span 3 days. The family meals daily for a festive meal, usually semolina porridge first day, couscous with 7 vegetables second day, chicken third day. People offer their best wishes for the New Year in terms such as "Asggas Amggas" or " Asggas Amanar (Happy New Year)".
